So when Porsche announced the production of a faster, hardtop version of the Boxster called the Cayman S, we took notice.

Porsche Boxster/Boxster S

Redesigned for 2005, Porsche's twin-trunk, mid-engine Porsche Boxster retains its signature look although every panel on the car was changed. Base Porsche Boxsters have a 2.7-liter flat-6 with 240 bhp; Porsche Boxster S versions, a 3.2-liter flat-6 with 280 bhp, along with wider tires and bigger brakes. Upgrades for 2006 include head airbags that deploy from the windowsills, optional 19-in. Porsche Carrera Sport wheels, and an optional "electronic logbook" that records and stores information about every trip you make.

Porsche Carrera GT

When a common, steel-chassis Porsche just won't do, there's the Porsche Carrera GT. As it was originally envisioned as an endurance racing car, it has more than the proper credentials for supercar street use: a 605-bhp V-10 engine, a tub of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, a ceramic twin-disc clutch, carbon-ceramic brake rotors, pushrod-actuated suspension, active aerodynamics and a top speed north of 200 mph ... 205, to be exact. If you're lucky, you can see one at an open track day near you.

Porsche 911 Carrera/S/4/4S

All-wheel drive, a 1.5-in.-wider rear track and correspondingly wider rear fenders characterize the Porsche Carrera 4 and Porsche Carrera 4S variants of the latest Porsche 911, internally known as Porsche 997. Like the Porsche Boxster, this iconic rear-engine sports car gets head airbags in addition to thorax and frontal airbags, and the optional electronic logbook and 10-spoke Porsche Carrera Sport wheels. Additionally, Porsche Carrera S models can be had with an optional power kit that boosts its 3.8-liter flat-6's output from 355 bhp to 381.

Porsche Cayman S

Named for a small, agile crocodile, this mid-engine Porsche Boxster-based coupe will likely snap at the heels of big brother Porsche 911 for top handling honors in the Porsche lineup. And its acceleration won't be far behind with a 3.4-liter boxer-6 generating 295 bhp, capable of hurtling the Porsche Cayman S to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 171 mph. Transmission choices include a standard 6-speed manual, and an optional 5-speed Tiptronic S gearbox.
