Porsche 997 Carrera tuning: The RUF R Kompressor
Ruf now introduces the Porsche 997 Carrera with an entirely new Ruf Supercharger (or Kompressor in German). The Supercharger is completely hidden with in the rear of the Porsche Carrera, hiding the veracious nature of this beast. Beyond the color the 997 Carrera looks almost identical to the 650bhp twin turbo Ruf RT12. Unlike the RT12 this Carrera R Kompressor is shown off with the traditional 5 spoke 19 inch Ruf alloy wheels.Around town the Porsche Carrera with it's Ruf Supercharger doesn't give out any extraneous noise, as a matter of fact there's almost no way of telling the difference between this highly tuned Ruf supercar and a regular Porsche 997 Carrera. This holds true up until the throttle is punched and in a smooth motion power peaks in an unbelievable amount of time. 0 to 60 comes in 4.1 seconds and the RUF Kompressor keeps on pushing all the way to 7000rpm, top speed of 186 mph. These numbers are claimed on a Porsche Carrera S with the Supercharger installed. This is of course only a split second slower (0.1s) then the factory Porsche 996 Twin Turbo although the Porsche twin turbo has completely different power and torque characteristics.
The Ruf Kompressor develops 435 bhp at 7000 rpm and 346 lb-ft of torque at 5000rpm. The 996 Twin Turbo delivers it's top 415 bhp at 6000 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque between 2700 rpm and 4600 rpm. Due to this tuning the turbo has a relatively flat torque curve between the rpm range and intern feels rather unexciting even though it is extremely powerful and beets the Ruf Kompressor to 62 mph. Ruf's R Kompressor does develop a faster top speed however. The balance of this car is composed nicely to deliver a refined drive through even the tightest corners, it hunkers down and remains reassuringly stable at both ends. Over steer is achieved without much effort at lower rpm's through slower corners. The RUF Supercharger, developed by ASA in Germany, is a highly efficient unit with very low friction. The Ruf supercharger for the Carrera is driven directly off the crankshaft by a poly-rip belt. The centrifugal supercharger has a maximum effective speed of 110,000 rpm before the blade tips go supersonic and loose their effect. Therefore if the engine is turning at 6800 which is the peak power, the turbines are pulling 102,000 rpm.The R Kompressor kit consists of an ASA supercharger made to Ruf specifications, custom intake manifolds, modified fuel injectors, free-flow metal catalytic converters, and a reprogrammed ECU. Boost pressure is 0.5 bar while fuel pressure remains unchanged. To cope with the extra heat generated by the forced induction Ruf has equipped the 997 Carrera with a water cooled intercooler with it's own independent cooling circuit boosted by a electric water pump. The setup can be added to 3.4L, 3.6L and the 3.8L Carrera 996 and 997 model lines, Carrera 4 and 2.
