The constitution of HEPA filters

HEPA filters have a special paper-like glass fiber sheet pleated in a "V" shaped structure. It has corrugated aluminum separators between the pleats. It bounds to a strong base that forms the core of the filter. HEPA filters are not purifiers but just filters. They depend on motorized fans and can make the surrounding air pass through them. They tend to be noisy, are brittle and not very effective in large spaces. Apart from such shortcomings, these filters still reign supreme in the US market for their efficiency. It has a very high efficiency of 99.97% where 0.03% counts for the germs already present in your lungs.

How a HEPA works:
  • It uses the electrical energy to filter out the stagnated pollutants.
  • Its fan attracts the pollutants and traps them to the filter.
  • The trapped particles are then removed from the filter to ensure further filtration.

Filter not a purifier

HEPA is not a purifier but a filter. Though it helps in air purification, yet it cannot neutralize the microbes present in the indoor environment. Thus, it can collect germs, viruses, fungi etc. but cannot neutralize them all together. The growing awareness of the people has led to rise in its demand. It is going to become one of the most promising industries in coming years. Experts believe that the market for Air Purification and Filter industry would extend to 6.2 Billion by the year 2006. This indicates the growing rise in its demand even further.
